The Erie Canal is quite a marvel of engineering and has been such a pleasant journey for us. On a beautiful sunny day we ended up traveling 30 miles from Tonawanda to Middleport. We went though our first two locks, which compared to the Welland Canal wasn't such a big deal. A father and daughter team were on a brand new boat behind us in the lock. We found out that they were delivering this luxury sailboat to a customer at the Annapolis Boat show in Maryland. What a dream job!

Once we reached Middleport we crash landed against a concrete wall. The current was strong and the wind was up, so we ended up with a few minor scratches on the hull. Once secured, we were fine. Middleport is a small town..... a very small town. Pony's is a popular place for wings. There's a coffee shop and a sketchy restaurant that opens and closes at the owner's discretion. Good thing it was free to dock there. Power boaters from Grand Island, near Buffalo invited us for a riverside fire, drinks and laughs which made for a fun evening. We also met an avid cyclist who set up his tent close to FBG. He was following an amazing paved bike route all along the canal which attracted walkers, joggers and cyclists.
