Saturday Dec 14

Leaving again at first light, we set off in calm conditions until we got into St. Simons sound. The wind was coming out of the west and we began seeing some good wave action as we passed by beautiful Jekyll Island. Enteringinto St Andrews Sound the winds picked up with gusts up to 30knots and with the water being shallow, the white capped waves were making things really uncomfortable. The 1st mate did great and we were able to press onward to a quieter river on the ICW.

The ICW at this point became much calmer and wider, so it was a pleasure to cruise it. As we came to Cumberland Island , there was a Trident Nuclear submarine training base on Kings Bay. We were told to expect a security escort by the area, but none showed up as there were no submarines in the area.

As we entered a popular anchorage area in the southern part of Cumberland Sound, the wind picked up a bit from the west. The river was flowing south at the time so we had a strong current and a wind at 90 degrees to each other. Not an easy task to set anchor under those conditions. With Lynn at the helm, I dropped the anchor, but the boat bot surprisingly started going out of control. After aborting, we changed tactics a little and we were able to successfully set out anchor. Shortly after we did this, the wind down ( of course ). I set the anchor sentinel so we could avoid a possible anchor rode keel wrap issue. We had steak for dinner which had been BBQd on the the outside propane BBQ at the back of the boat. The sunset was glorious sunset.

Even though it was supposed to be a quiet anchorage, for much of the evening we could hear announcements being made over the PA system from the submarine naval base across the bay along with bugle sounds ( its a military operation ). They stopped making announcement once bedtime rolled around.

Before I forget , the picture below is one of FBG anchored out that was taken by a fellow boater who happened to be sharing our anchorage ( at Crescent Creek ) and took this picture. So cool. That's us out there !

Another boat casualty from one of the past hurricanes to go through the area
